A Texas driver education certificate is documentation showing that you have successfully completed the required driver education program. The type of certificate you receive depends on your age and the driver education program you complete.
Two important Texas driver education certificates are the ADE-1317 and DE-964. The ADE-1317 is associated with adult driver education, while the DE-964 is associated with eligible teen driver education programs.
After you successfully complete the required course and meet all completion requirements, your certificate can be provided digitally by the course provider when digital delivery is available. You can then download or print the certificate for use during the applicable Texas driver licensing process.
2. What Is the ADE-1317 Certificate?
The ADE-1317 is the certificate associated with Texas adult driver education. Eligible adults who are required to complete an approved adult driver education course receive the appropriate certificate of completion for use in the Texas driver licensing process.
A Auto Driving School offers a 6-hour online adult driver education course for eligible Texas adults in English and Spanish (Educación Vial para Adultos). After successfully completing the required course material and completion requirements, eligible students can access their ADE-1317 certificate digitally.
If you are searching for terms such as ADE certificate, ADE-1317 certificate Texas, ADE 1317 certificate, or Texas adult driver education certificate, you are likely looking for information about this adult driver education certificate.
3. Who Needs an ADE-1317 Certificate?
The ADE-1317 is associated with the adult driver education process in Texas. If you are an adult who is required to complete a driver education course as part of obtaining your first Texas driver license, you may need an ADE-1317 certificate after completing the required course.
Texas licensing requirements can vary depending on your age, license type, and individual circumstances. Before your DPS appointment, review the current Texas requirements that apply to your specific situation.
4. What Is the DE-964 Certificate?
The DE-964 is associated with Texas teen driver education. Eligible teen students completing a Texas driver education program, including the Parent Taught Driver Education (PTDE) pathway, may receive the appropriate DE-964 documentation for the licensing process.
A Auto Driving School provides an online Parent Taught Driver Education course designed for eligible Texas teens completing the PTDE pathway with a parent or guardian.
Because teen licensing requirements differ from adult licensing requirements, students and parents should follow the current Texas DPS and driver education requirements that apply to their specific situation.
5. ADE-1317 vs DE-964: Which Certificate Do You Need?
The certificate you need depends primarily on your age and the driver education program you are completing.
| Certificate | Who It Applies To | Related Driver Education Program |
|---|---|---|
| ADE-1317 | Eligible adult students | Adult Driver Education |
| DE-964 | Eligible teen students | Teen Driver Education / PTDE |
If you are an eligible adult completing the required adult driver education course, the ADE-1317 is the relevant certificate. If you are an eligible teen completing a Texas driver education program, such as the Parent Taught Driver Education pathway, the applicable documentation includes the DE-964.
If you are unsure which certificate applies to you, check the current Texas DPS requirements or contact your driver education provider before completing your licensing appointment.

8. ADE-1317 vs ITAD: Are They the Same?
No. The ADE-1317 and ITAD are separate and should not be confused.
ITAD stands for Impact Texas Adult Drivers. It is a separate Texas driver safety program focused on the dangers of distracted driving and is different from the adult driver education course associated with the ADE-1317.
Completing an adult driver education course and completing the ITAD program are not the same thing. Depending on your licensing situation, you may need to complete both requirements.
Always check the current Texas DPS requirements to determine which certificates or completion documents you need for your specific licensing step.
9. What Documents Do You Need for Your Texas DPS Appointment?
Your driver education certificate is only one part of the Texas driver licensing process. Depending on your age, license type, and individual circumstances, you may also need documents such as:
- Proof of identity
- Proof of lawful presence, when applicable
- Proof of Texas residency
- Social Security documentation, when applicable
- Your ADE-1317 or DE-964 certificate, when applicable
- Other documents required by Texas DPS for your specific application
Documentation requirements can vary based on your individual situation. Before visiting a DPS office, review the current Texas DPS requirements and make sure you have the documents required for your particular license application.
